Walk Softly and Carry a Magic Wand

February 2, 2010

As I considered the concept of starting out with a clear vision, I noticed a path open up among the trees.

“So this is your idea of Pathfinding?” I asked the aliens.

Yewell nodded, “Previously unseen paths are always discovered when you seek deeper vision.”

“That’s profound,” I said.

“I have my moments,” he said with a shrug.

I nodded toward the path. “So where does it lead?”

“There’s only one way to find out,” said Iman.

I took the hint and started down the path. Within only a few steps, I noticed that the temperature had risen and the sun had crawled higher into the sky.

“Is it me, or is it getting hotter?” I asked.

“The seasons are changing,” said Yewell. “Spring turns to Summer just as your Pathfinding has turned to Modeling.”

“Modeling?” I said, striking a pose. “Like this?”

“Of sorts,” said Iman. “As you begin to follow the path you have found using strategy and focus, you begin to dig a little deeper not only into what you are capable of doing, but why you are doing it. Just as the Summer provides the seeds of Spring time to mature, so do the seeds of your vision mature into conscience and intuition.”

Just as he said it, I heard a crack above me and stopped short as a branch fell from the nearest tree, landing directly in front of me.

“Sort of like that,” said Yewell.

I picked up the leafless branch and tested it for balance. “Walk softly and carry a big stick, right?” I said.

“That’s more than a stick,” said Iman. “It’s a wand.”

I parried it in front of me. “Like a magic wand?”

“Or a divining rod,” he said. “Modeling is about intuition, conscience, or as your friend Gale calls it, Ambition.”

“It is looking more deeply into what is possible,” added Yewell, “with the vision that emanates more from Spirit that from the Mind.”

“So, again,” I said, “is it a magic wand?”

“Magic,” Iman said, “is simply seeing what is possible and making it so. That is the basis of Modeling.”

I looked again at the stick in my hand, focusing on the possibilities, when the tip began to smolder and burst into flames. As it did, the sun was extinguished, leaving my new torch as the only light by which to see.

“Whoa!” I said. “Did I do that?”

“You’re the one holding the stick,” said Yewell.

I waved the wand in the air, leaving a trail of fire through the darkened forest.

“The role of Modeling,” Iman said, “is devoted to leaving a legacy. The Ambition that attends it draws you to seek meaning and contribution through your actions so that you can serve as a light in the darkness.”

“Jung called it the archetype of the Warrior,” Yewell continued. “Your goals become much more heightened, and you have a greater sense of what you are able to conquer.”

Holding the flame in my hand, I could definitely sense a greater power burning in my spirit. Without another word, I held it above me and continued down the path in its light.
