How will “social media marketing experts” change the world?
The last decade has brought us overwhelming changes in our economy, in our technology, and unfortunately in our unemployment rate. Although a record number of Americans are without work, it seems that just as many have branded themselves as “social media marketing experts.” Although we know too well the myriad of ways one becomes unemployed, the question must be asked, “How does one become a social media marketing expert?” Just what is a social media marketing expert anyway?
Let’s break down the title to get a better grasp on the meaning of the phrase. As far as “expert” goes, we know that an expert is a master at what he does. He has spent long hours honing his craft and developing his certain skill set in order to engage in his chosen activity and teach it to others.
How about “media?” Usually today it refers to the news organizations, TV shows, radio stations, movies, and print literature that shape our consciousness. Ultimately, it is any form of communicative property, be it the written work a sound, or an image.
“Social” pertains to the proclivity to spend one’s time in the company of others. It refers to one who has many friends and acquaintances.
Then we have the gerund, a rather pesky part of speech at times. Marketing is an action word for many reasons. It encompasses the entire process of bringing products or services from the producer or seller to the buyer or consumer. It involved four more gerunds – advertising, shipping, storing, and selling.
So when we talk about a social media marketing expert, we are talking about someone who has become proficient in using various means of communication to get his friends and associates to buy and sell stuff. That’s a heck of a lot better than being unemployed. How do you think this new job title is going to help develop the new economic structure?
