Florikan ESA

July 30, 2006

As a Sarasota native, I have seen the devastating effects of red tide as it has increased over the years. I have been following the crusade of local controlled release fertilizer manufacturer Florikan, since my company produced a piece about Florikan upon their winning the 2005 Manufacturer of the Year from the Economic Development Corporation of Sarasota County.

Florikan received THE 2005 GULF GUARDIAN AWARD FROM A PROGRAM ADMINISTERED BY THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY (EPA.) “Florikan’s commitment to the environment establishes the company as a leader in the Horticulture Industry by developing products that reduce nutrient inputs and run-off, “said Jimmy Palmer, EPA Regional Administrator in Atlanta, GA. ”The reduction of nutrient run-off to the Gulf of Mexico is a significant challenge. Together, the Southeastern Nursery Industry and Florikan are meeting this challenge through the use of Best Management Practices and environmentally sound growing methods.”

A company that sells fertilizer launching a campaign which promotes the use of LESS fertilizer tells me that they are a company that should be listened to. Based upon the professional opinion I have heard from representatives of Mote Marine Laboratory and other local environmental professionals, and upon the uncompromising advances Florikan has made in environmental sustainability, including their receiving the 2005 Gulf Guardian Award from a program administered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for their staged nutrient release fertilizer, I believe that Florikan’s vision has merit and should be given a second thought.
